Each June the Menno Place family gathers to honour the residents who have passed in the previous year. It’s a special time for families, friends, and staff to come together with a memorial service followed by a butterfly release.
The next Annual Memorial Service will take place on Friday, June 20, 2025 at 1:00 in the Menno Hospital Chapel with the Butterfly Release to follow at 2:30 in the Menno Home Courtyard.
The service will be livestreamed and also available to view online after the event has ended. The butterfly release follows directly after the service in the Menno Home Courtyard. The memorial service is by invitation. The butterfly release is open to all and you are welcome to invite your friends and family to attend.
Annual Memorial Service

The Annual Memorial Service takes place in the Menno Hospital Chapel (#2 on the map below). Families, friends, and caregivers are invited to bring a photograph or memento of their loved one to display during the service.
The service will start at 1:00 and runs for one hour. It includes music, readings, prayer and a presentation that honours each resident who passed in the last year, organized by the community where they lived.

Butterfly Release

Following the service the Butterfly Release is open to all and celebrates the lives of our loved ones through the release of beautiful butterflies. You can purchase butterflies to release yourself or donate them to give to a resident. This day is always a highlight of the year as we remember and celebrate all the ones we have loved. Refreshments to follow.
The metamorphosis of a butterfly is a powerful symbol as we go through the grieving process. We find hope in the transformation of these butterflies, a hope that even through transition and loss, beauty and new life can be found. Residents and families purchase butterflies – some to release for a joyful experience – and some to release in honour of a loved one.
